As such here are our definitions of the processes used during manufacturing for our products and the definitions of the additives we use to help keep your dog healthy!
Glucosamine is added to pet foods to support joint health and mobility as it works by synthesising hyaluronic acid and glycoaminoglycans within the joint. It is especially popular within puppy and senior diets to support growing bones and help maintain strong bones and good mobility further into senior years.
Chondroitin is added to pet foods to support joint health and mobility as it is a glycosaminoglycan, a “building block” of the joint. It also works to stop degradative enzymes which promote cartilage breakdown. It is especially popular within puppy and senior diets to support growing bones and help maintain strong bones and good mobility further into senior years.
MSM, an organosulphur compound is often added to pet food in conjunction with Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulphate for a joint health and mobility aid. MSM can have a protective effect from oxidative and inflammatory damage caused by exercise. Therefore it can help to reduce damage to joint through oxidation effects caused by constant exercise of active puppies. In human studies MSM reduced pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis patients.
FOS naturally occurring in plants and are not hydrolysed by small intestinal glycosidases and therefore reach the cecum structurally unchanged. In the cecum they are metabolised by intestinal microflora and form short chain carboxlic acids. FOS is included in pet food as an aid to digestive health. FOS can benefit digestive health by serving as a substrate for microflora of the large intestine. It encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria at the expense of putrefactive bacteria. FOS can also promote improvements in immune function.
MOS are derived from yeast cell walls and are hydrolysed by lactobacilli and other bifidobacteria. Using MOS in pet food is beneficial for digestive health by promoting growth of beneficial gut bacteria, increasing immune function, intercepting pathogenic bacteria colonisation in the intestine.
As cats and dogs are unable to digest cellulose, it’s applications in pet diets includes hairball control, weight control, maintaining a healthy gut transit time and avoidance of constipation.
L-Carnitine is a vitamin compound which is formed in the liver and kidneys using Methioine and Lysine. L Carnitine is required for transportation of fatty acids into mitochondria during production of metabolic energy. In pet food L-Carnitine is often added in order to support weight loss or weight management as it is shown to assist weight loss as well as fat loss in dogs and cats. L –Carnitine also reduced lean tissue loss during weight loss.
Yucca Schidigera Extract
Yucca Schidigera is used in pet foods as it can help to reduce flatus and faecal odours. The reduction in odours occurs through the alteration of odiferous compounds, possibly through binding odourants or alteration of microintestinal flora. Yucca Schidigera can also help to reduce hydrogen sulphide production.
During the manufaturing process our products use freshly prepared, gently steam cooked meat. The meats are collected directly from abattoirs and fish mongers. The meat we buy and use has been passed by a veterinarian as fit and healthy for the human food chain so is of a ‘human food grade’ standard. The soft meats are naturally low in bone and ash and, unlike some rendered meat meals, are without heads, feet, hooves, hides, hair or feather*.
All our freshly prepared meats are ground into a mince and gently steam cooked in their own juices to ensure optimum digestibility and the safety of your pet food. We use patented world-first technology from Wenger to produce the extruded pet food. Using a low temperature and high speed mixing the patented ‘Thermal Twin Extruder’ gently steam cooks the meat, before producing dry kibbles using a series of novel driers. The pet foods produced contain previously unachievable levels of freshly prepared meat (<200g meat/100g dry food) and have fantastic digestibility and palatability.
The digestibility of the meat protein has been shown to be much higher. Normally 1 part in 5 remains undigested (20%) whereas for freshly prepared meat only 1 part in 20 is undigested (5%). Palatability is also improved as the freshly prepared meat has decreased levels of negative sensory cues, such as free fatty acids, which come from even slightly aged foods.
Health and Wellbeing
Because the meats are handled like a human food, the negative cues and signature bacterial ‘spoilage’ products are almost undetectable. Put simply this means that any pet food containing freshly prepared meat is better for the long term health and welfare of your dog.
As there is no rendering process, the energy required to transport and then cook the meat at lower temperatures makes your food greener. The potential to reduce the total protein level in the food is also a fantastic environmental story through reduced animal use.

Our manufacturer’s Trading Standards (UK based home authority) has given authority to use the terms: “Prepared using fresh, gently steam cooked chicken” or “Freshly Prepared Chicken” Or “Gently steam cooked chicken” Other terms which can be used “Delivered Fresh”
